Paediatric orthopaedics

Kinderorthopädie

This specialist area treats congenital deformities, malformations arising in connection with other diseases, growth disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as injuries including fractures and their long -term consequences, whether caused by sporting activity or accidents.

The aim of therapeutic treatment

The aim of therapeutic treatment is to support the growing child into adulthood with optimal musculoskeletal health. As the musculoskeletal system is subject to continuous changes during growth, specialist care is required.

Areas of treatment in paediatric orthopaedics

  • Congenital deformities are fortunately rare, but when they do occur specialised treatment is necessary.
  • Functional and muscular problems and growth disorders such as knock knees, bow legs or leg length discrepancy are more common and are often treated with physiotherapy or minimally invasive corrections.
  • Other growth disorders may also require treatment, but usually in the form of conservative therapy.
  • Children with underlying diseases (e.g. cerebral palsy) require special attention, as these can lead to problems throughout the musculoskeletal system as they grow, necessitating more intensive therapeutic measures or operations.

Focus of treatment

Our main goal is to identify problems at an early stage, and to treat their causes and consequences in order to achieve normal conditions in the musculoskeletal system by the time the child has finished growing.

Range of treatments

  • Assessment and advice for all paediatric orthopaedic problems
  • Conservative therapy and accompanying support for the above-mentioned problems
  • Assessment and treatment of sports injuries and fractures
  • Surgical corrections in the case of necessary interventions due to congenital or acquired deformities and growth disorders

Special features

  • Surgical procedures in children under six years old: if surgical measures are required, a referral is made to a specialist centre.
  • Spinal deformities: if surgical procedures are necessary to correct a spinal deformity, a referral is made to a centre for paediatric orthopaedic spinal interventions.
