Osteoarthritis / Artificial ankle joint replacement

Fuss

Arthritis of the upper or lower ankle joint leads to pain and limited mobility due to cartilage wear. Causes include accidents, misalignment or overloading.

If conservative and joint-preserving measures no longer help, a stiffening or artificial joint replacement may be necessary.

Depending on the severity, the joint is stiffened or replaced with a prosthesis. The procedure is performed as an inpatient, usually with a stay of around ten days.

After treatment, the leg is relieved and stabilised for a certain period of time. Physiotherapy and preventive measures usually begin promptly. The recovery phase lasts several weeks.
