Hammer / claw toes

Fuss

With a hammer or claw toe, the toe is permanently bent and causes pressure points and pain in the shoe.

Surgery is indicated if symptoms persist and conservative measures do not provide relief.

Depending on the degree of severity, tendons are lengthened or joints and bones are corrected. The choice of method depends on the mobility of the toe.

The operated toe is fixed with a wire for a certain period of time and then stabilised with plaster straps. Gradual weight-bearing is usually possible soon, and normal footwear can usually be worn again once the wire has been removed.
